Enjoy picturesque views along Chequessett Neck Rd that leads to Great Island in the National Seashore and a wonderful walk around “The Gut,” as Great Island was an island until 1831.

Prerequisite: Instructional Clinic & at least two 3-3.5 mile CCNW walks at a steady pace on varied terrain including soft sand
Distance: 3.45-3.75 miles. No shorter or turnback options.
Pace: Moderate
Terrain: Stairs from the parking lot down to the “Gut”, long stretches of hard packed dirt & sand, a combined total of 3/4 mile of soft sand, walk on beach and return to the Gut.

For Your Safety: Consider the weather forecast when booking a walk. WATER MUST BE CARRIED ON ALL WALKS! In consideration of personal and group safety, if you arrive without water, you will not be allowed to walk. Dress for the weather and protect yourself from the elements. Choose appropriate footwear for trail conditions. Use repellent to protect yourself from ticks, which are active year. Wear blaze orange for visibility & safety during hunting season.

This 3.5-3.75 mile moderate paced walk around the “Gut” at Great Island includes crossing a low dune to Cape Cod Bay with views from Sandwich to Provincetown. We’ll return to the Gut and walk out to the peninsula where we could see oyster fishermen.

• Limit 1 walk per day.
• Wear your CCNW ID badge
• Sand baskets if you use them in soft sand
• Porta Potties available, but no water.
• If your plans change, kindly cancel your booking at least 24 hours in advance of walk start time so other walkers may join.

This walk is authorized under a National Park Service Special Use Permit.

Walk may be canceled, changed, or rescheduled for weather or other reasons. Cancellation decision will be made at least 2 hours in advance. Check your email (including spam) before driving to the walk. If a walk is canceled, registrants will receive a system-generated email, and the walk will no longer be visible in the event listing or on the calendar.

Directions: Great Island Trailhead, Chequessett Neck Rd, Wellfleet.
Parking lot on the LEFT at the intersection of Chequessett Neck and Griffin Island Rds. You will encounter construction (.3 mi before the entrance to the trailhead) at the bridge crossing the Herring River. Please allow extra time for road construction in Wellfleet, which generally starts at 7:00 AM.
