Once known simply as “The Woods,” the vast Punkhorn Parklands is a testament to the power of locals to influence land preservation. Our wooded and hilly route includes ponds and bogs, including a rare quaking bog. Tuck this one in early and have the rest of the holiday weekend ahead!
Meet at 7:45 to sign in and stretch. We’ll begin walking promptly at 8. Hosted by Sue Moynihan with Sweep TBD. Read to the bottom for directions to our meeting point.
Prerequisite: Instructional clinic, previous intermediate-level walks of 4+ miles, and ability to meet the planned distance and pace
Distance: 4 miles. No shorter or turn-back option.
Pace: Moderate-to-fast, 21/22-min miles, with occasional brief water stops. Pace is intended to keep heart rates up and build stamina.
Terrain: Uneven, hilly hard-pack trail with rocks and roots. Supportive, trail-type footwear a must.
For Your Safety: Consider the weather forecast when making your RSVP decision. WATER MUST BE CARRIED ON ALL WALKS! In consideration of personal and group safety, if you arrive without water, you will not be allowed to walk. Dress for the weather and choose appropriate footwear for trail conditions. Use repellent to protect yourself from ticks, which are active year round.**Display blaze orange for visibility and safety during spring turkey season.**
- Limit 1 walk per day.
- Wear your CCNW ID badge.
- No mud baskets, please (tripping hazard)
- Carry bug spray. Consider the need for sun protection.
- No water or restroom. Bring tissue in a plastic bag in case of a bio break need.
- Kindly update your RSVP at least 24 hours in advance of walk start time if your plans change. This allows the Host to plan and accommodate other walkers.
Walk may be canceled, changed, or rescheduled for weather or other reasons. Cancellation decision will be made at least 2 hours in advance. **Check your email (including spam) AND this walk listing and comments, below, before driving to the walk.** If a walk is canceled, registrants will receive a system-generated email, and the walk will no longer be visible in the event listing or on the calendar.
Directions: Take Stony Brook Road in Brewster to Run Hill Road. Travel past the transfer station and continue on the narrow road. The trailhead is located on the left immediately after the road turns to gravel. 686 Run Hill Road is the closest street address to the parking lot.
