Explore the National Sea Shore’s deepest valley carved by glacier meltwater 18,000 years ago. Climb a sandy dune for a spectacular view overlooking Ballston Beach. This walk through a dramatic elevation with its protected heathland vegetation to the twin East & West summits at Bearberry Hill provides panoramic views of the coast and the valley’s 19th-20th cranberry operation.
Meet at 8:45 am to sign in and stretch. We’ll begin walking promptly at 9:00. Hosted by Ellie Devlin with Sweep TBD.
Prerequisite: Instructional clinic and ability to walk at a steady pace for 3-3.5 miles on uneven, hilly terrain, including many steep steps and soft sand.
Distance: 3.1-3.5 miles; no shorter or turn-back option
Pace: Steady Moderate with occasional rest stops to capture the views.
Terrain: Sandy beach (~0.25 mi) at low tide, pavement, hard packed forested trails, several hills, soft/loose sand, and many steep log steps.
For Your Safety: Consider the weather forecast when making your RSVP decision. WATER MUST BE CARRIED ON ALL WALKS! In consideration of personal and group safety, if you arrive without water, you will not be allowed to walk. Dress for the weather and choose appropriate footwear for trail conditions. Use repellent to protect yourself from ticks, which are active year round. Wear blaze orange for visibility & safety during hunting season.
- Limit 1 walk per day.
- Wear your CCNW ID badge.
- Bring bug spray, just in case.
- Bring rubber tips. Sand baskets if you like them for the beach.
- Some poison ivy along the trail edge (Not visible yet.)
- No restrooms or water. Bring tissue in a plastic bag in case of a bio break need.
If your plans change, kindly cancel your booking at least 24 hours in advance of walk start time so other walkers may join.
This walk is authorized under a National Park Service Special Use Permit.
Walk may be canceled, changed, or rescheduled for weather or other reasons. Cancellation decision will be made at least 2 hours in advance. **Check your email (including spam) before driving to the walk.** If a walk is canceled, registrants will receive a system-generated email, and the walk will no longer be visible in the event listing or on the calendar.
Directions: Ballston Beach parking lot…Rt 6 to Pamet Roads Truro exit. Slight Right toward North Pamet Rd, then LEFT onto South Pamet Rd. Follow the winding road that leads to Ballston Beach parking lot.
