Part 1: On this walk at beautiful Coast Guard Beach we’ll explore how wind and waves have sculpted the area, and how it figured into the Watergate scandal following a weekend stay here by Nixon staffers in 1971.
Part 2, optional: Sunday (2/22) at 1 pm, come to a screening of All The President’s Men on the theater-size screen at Salt Pond Visitor Center, hosted by Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore and the National Park Service. Free and open to all.
Meet at 2:15 to sign in and stretch. We’ll begin promptly at 2:30. Hosted by Sue Moynihan and Sweep TBD. Read to the bottom for directions to our meeting point.
Prerequisite: Instructional clinic
Distance: 2-2.5 miles
Pace: Slow to moderate, walking as a group, with view and rest stops.
Terrain: Mix of soft and packed sand.
For Your Safety: Consider the weather forecast when booking a walk. WATER MUST BE CARRIED ON ALL WALKS! In consideration of personal and group safety, if you arrive without water, you will not be allowed to walk. Dress for the weather and protect yourself from the elements. Choose appropriate footwear for trail conditions. Use repellent to protect yourself from ticks, which are active year-round.
- Limit 1 walk per day.
- Wear your CCNW ID badge.
- Sand or mud baskets helpful.
- Open, exposed route. If cold/windy, sunglasses, ear protection, and neck gaiter or balaclava are recommended.
- No restrooms or water. Bring tissue in a plastic bag in the event of a bio break need.
- If your plans change, kindly cancel your booking at least 24 hours in advance of walk start time so other walkers may join.
Walk may be canceled, changed, or rescheduled for weather (steady snow/rain, windchill 19 degrees or below, ice) or other reasons. Cancellation decision will be made at least 2 hours in advance. ** Check your email (including spam) AND this walk listing before driving to the walk. ** If a walk is canceled, registrants will receive a system-generated email, and the walk will no longer be visible in the event listing or on the calendar.
This walk is authorized under a National Park Service Special Use Permit.
Location: Coast Guard Beach, Eastham
Directions: Route 6 to Eastham. Turn onto Nauset Road. Nauset becomes Doane Road. Drive to the end, turn right, and proceed up to the parking lot. Approximate coordinates: 41.84448° N, 69.94777° W
