There’s nothing quite like a walk at Great Island! Breathtaking views of dunes and an ever changing shoreline, while getting in a great workout. There’s always the chance of finding cool beach treasures and seeing seals and whales too.

For Your Safety: Consider the weather forecast when booking a walk. WATER MUST BE CARRIED ON ALL WALKS! In consideration of personal and group safety, if you arrive without water, you will not be allowed to walk. Dress for the weather and protect yourself from the elements. Choose appropriate footwear for trail conditions. Use repellent to protect yourself from ticks, which are active year-round.

• Prerequisite: Instructional clinic and at least two recent 5+ mile CCNW walks at a moderate to fast pace on primarily hard-packed sand.
• Distance: 8-9 miles. No turn-back option.
• Pace: Moderate to fast (22 – 25 minute mile, depending on terrain), with as many water stops as needed, extra time at Jeremy Point.
• Terrain: Multiple log steps/stairs at beginning/end, hard sand, straw path, one high soft sand dune crossing, long stretches of soft and hard sand.

This walk starts at the area in Wellfleet Harbor known as “The Gut,” heads to Cape Cod Bay, then all the way via the beach to Jeremy Point, back the same route.

Meet at 9:15 AM for sign-in and light stretching to begin walking promptly at 9:30 AM (this walk is tide dependent). Hosted by Debbie Zinck and Sweep TBD.

• Limit 1 walk per day.
• Wear your CCNW ID badge.
• Rubber tips are recommended. Sand baskets optional.
• Bring bug spray.
• Bring sun protection. Unless there is cloud cover, this walk will be in full sun!
• There are two Porta-Potties at the parking lot but they may not be open yet. Bring tissue in a plastic bag in the event of a bio break need along the route.
• No water source available. Bring plenty of water!

Walk may be canceled, changed, or rescheduled for weather or other reasons. Cancellation decision will be made at least 2 hours in advance of walk start time. **Always Check your email (including spam) AND this event listing before driving to the walk.** If a walk is canceled, registrants will receive a system-generated email, and the walk will no longer be visible in the event listing or on the calendar.

If your plans change, kindly cancel your booking at least 24 hours in advance of walk start time so other walkers may join.

This walk is authorized under a National Park Service Special Use Permit.

Directions:
1440 Chequessett Neck Rd, Wellfleet. The Great Island sign and parking lot sneaks up on your left. If you reach the end of the road, you’ve gone too far. Please allow extra time for road construction in Wellfleet, which starts at 7:00 AM.
