Enjoy a walk along this Cape Cod Bay beach before crossing a small dune into a pine/oak forest that leads to the historic Atwood-Higgins & Baker-Biddle homes and structures that are an integral part of the history of Bound Brook.
Meet at 8:45 for sign-in and stretching to begin walking promptly at 9:00. Hosted by Ellie Devlin, with Sweep TBD.
Prerequisite: Instructional Clinic and prior CCNW events of 3+ miles on varied terrain
Distance: 4 miles. No turn-back or shorter option.
Pace: Moderate with breaks to view historical locations
Terrain: 1/2-3/4 mi on the beach with some limited soft sand, hard packed dirt, forested trails, and several small dune crossings.
For Your Safety: Consider the weather forecast when booking a walk. WATER MUST BE CARRIED ON ALL WALKS! In consideration of personal and group safety, if you arrive without water, you will not be allowed to walk. Dress for the weather and protect yourself from the elements. Choose appropriate footwear for trail conditions. Use repellent to protect yourself from ticks, which are active year-round. Wear blaze orange for visibility & safety during hunting season.
- Limit 1 walk per day.
- Wear your CCNW ID badge.
- Sand baskets are helpful for dune crossings.
- Restrooms and water are not available. Bring tissue in a plastic bag in case of a bio break need.
- If your plans change, kindly cancel your booking at least 24 hours in advance of walk start time so other walkers may join.
This walk is authorized under a National Park Service Special Use Permit.
Walk may be canceled, changed, or rescheduled for weather or other reasons. Cancellation decision will be made at least 2 hours in advance. Check your email (including spam) before driving to the walk. If a walk is canceled, registrants will receive a system-generated email and the walk will no longer be visible in the event listing or on the calendar.
Directions: Meet at Duck Harbor Beach (on the bay side of Wellfleet). Travel Rt. 6 to Wellfleet Center exit. Follow Chequessett Neck Road to Griffin Island Road (which is right across from the entrance to Great Island Trailhead). Duck Harbor Beach is at the end of Griffin Island Road. Allow extra travel time for limited road construction along route 6 & on Chequessett Neck Rd at the Herring River bridge in Wellfleet.
