—Distance: 4.5 miles. No turn-back or shorter option

The Great Island Trail has been called the best hike in the CCNS. Our walk will take in about half of the trail, descending through the forest to The Gut, a section of the Herring River, then winding along the base of the dunes to the Herring River shoreline and climbing up to the woods before returning via the marsh trail with a quick detour over the dune to see the beach. There will be amazing views of the Herring River, Wellfleet Harbor, the marsh, dunes, and Cape Cod Bay.
